The Tiny Heart: Saves and Splurges

Saves and Splurges

Tank-Express (similar), Skirt-Target (exact one), Crossbody Bag-Target (similar), Sandals-Target (similar)

The other day I sent this Tweet about a DSLR:
I'm still undecided but it got me thinking about what I save on and what I splurge on...

Saves:

-Groceries. I'm not gonna lie, I use coupons every time I set foot in the grocery store. And I'm ALL about buying the store brand.
-Manicures. When I lived in NYC, I got my nails done every week (for 7 bucks!) but now I just do them myself. I don't have to worry that the manicurist is talking about me in Korean.
-Trendy clothes. The Target and Old Navy clearance racks are my best friends. So is Forever 21. I'm not going to shell out a ton of money on a leopard print miniskirt or a neon bag.

Splurges:
-Sunglasses. My small face means that I usually have to buy designer. The ones at Target just don't fit!
-Hair straightener. The cheap ones you can get at the drug store are NO match for my wavy hair.
-Makeup. I do use some drugstore makeup (Great Lash mascara anyone?) but when it comes to eyeshadows, eye primer, and liner I prefer high end brands like MAC, Urban Decay, NARS, and Too Faced.
-Vacations. If I'm gonna go on vacation, I like to do it up! I want to eat all the foods I can, go on fun excursions, and go shopping of course. (which is probably why I haven't been on vacation in a year, ha).

Now meet someone who knows how to wear a mix of saves/splurges in her own closet, Catherine from Small Town, Big Wardrobe!

My name is Catherine, and I live in southern Indiana with two dogs and two cats. When I'm not chasing after them, I love to document my daily outfits and style ideas on my blog, Small Town, Big Wardrobe. You can visit me there or catch me on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram - and I recently started a YouTube channel! I may or may not be addicted to social media.

  1. Fun post of saves and splurges :) Unfortunately I still get my nails done professionally every 2-3 weeks and it's $20. No matter how hard I try I just can't seem to do an "adult" looking polish on my own :(

  2. Yes I agree with saving on trending pieces and going big for vacations. All the money I save from not buying expensive clothes allows me to go on vacation! haha.. I really like that pink bag!!

  5. i so want a dslr but i agree that it's so pricey. i told myself i would save money towards it and buy one day when me and M have kids.

i agree about the trendy clothes - def ON and target the way to go. (i never find anything in F21!!)

i know one post a long time ago you had ray ban kids sunglasses- my face is so thin that i can't wear any "real" type sunglasses unless they are kids. have you found any new brands that work for you? i ordered the ray ban aviators in the "petite" fit, and they are a smidge big, but i think they work!! you should check them out if you are in the market for new shades.

  12. Great outfit - I love that skirt. I'm glad you recreated the outfit from Friday - it's fantastic :) I love coupons!! I save and splurge on different things too, but for me getting a DSLR was worth it because photography is one of my hobbies.

  13. Thanks so much for featuring me! :) I love your pattern mixing. For what it's worth, I think a great camera is a good investment. We've used ours on vacations and for family photos, besides on my blog. I was able to use credit card points and got mine for a great price because of it.

  14. You look so cute! I love using coupons, but I always forget to bring them with me! I also rarely get manicures unless it's for a special occasion. I just can't justify the money!

  15. I'm right there with you - I buy as many store brands as I can at the grocery store! And Target and Old Navy are my go to's for anything trendy that I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for! I do buy Target sunglasses too though, they do manage to fit my face. I know that is frustrating when they don't though, I don't blame you for splurging on good ones!

  16. Yay for stripes and florals. You look so adorable! We splurge on a lot of similar things. I'd say right now though, one of my biggest splurges is food. NYC is expensive, but there are so many amazing restaurants, I can't help but try them all out!

  17. I am in the same position, I would love a dlsr but its hard to put down so much money at once. I just had to shell out $700 for new tires on my car and I saved for it by putting aside $25 per week and I kept the money in a safe rather than depositing it into the bank so when I had to spend it, I didn't feel as if I was taking money out of an account. Weird strategy but it made it painless.

  18. I'm pretty cheap and poor (LOL) and I saved up for months for my DSLR. It's really a great investment because it lasts for years and you get SO much use out of it! Maybe put away a tiny bit of each paycheck and then after a few months you will have enough!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Not sure what kind of camera you use now, but it seems to do just as good as a dslr! I'm secretly wanting one too though lol :)

  20. Manicures for seven bucks!? That is awesome!

  21. You look so cute! I love this skirt. I try to save on groceries, I am signed up for eMeals to help, but then my boyfriend requests all these other expensive things and I always end up spending more than I want to :( Oh well! I try to save in as much areas as possible!

  24. Stripes and florals - what's not to love! Totally with you on the save and splurges. My base make-up is always MAC or No.7 (I don't think you have that in the US) but nail varnishes, some lipsticks I buy cheaper :) Holidays - so true, I want to do it in style!!

  25. I definitely think it's important to know when to save and splurge. I totally agree about going all out on vacations.

  30. Love the stripes and florals. :-) I'm also a cheapskate but I just invested in a DLSR that I got at Target. It was on sale and it's worth every penny. Some things we have to splurge on, like vacations.

  33. Loved hearing about what you save & splurge on. I save on make-up as I don't really care that much about what brands I am using & totally splurge on shoes, whoops! That being said, I LOVE my Canon Rebel T2i & thought that it was a solid investment, I didn't buy the most expensive camera, but got one that will grow with me as I am able to save up and purchase new lenses! I highly recommend it!

  36. Since I hardly wear make-up, I guess I save a lot in that area. I do splurge on my mascara (Peter Thomas Roth) and lipstick. I hardly do my nail, I just keep them clean and I visit the salon once every 3 months for a trim. I do splurge on my arm candies (handbags) and like you, vacation! I thin we have to be smart or else we'll get burn..

  56. I do the same thing. I spend very little on some things so I can spend more on others or spend more on things that will last me a long time rather than buy a lot of cheap things that will need to be replaced often.

I think I have learned enough Korean to know if the manicurist was talking about me but, unfortunately they aren't Korean in my area. :)

  57. Love your pattern mixing, and love this post! That's an important thing to think about every now and then... I feel like I'm good at splurging on classic pieces and saving on trendy ones, but I could be better at saving on the third category of not trendy but also not very versatile clothing/accessories/shoes! :)
