The Tiny Heart: May 2012

Plaid & Pearls

Dress-Delia's (cute option), Belt-H&M (similar for $10), Necklace-Vintage (similar pearls), Bracelets-F21 (similar), Sandals-American Eagle (very similar)

It was 92 degrees in Jersey this week and it seems the warm weather brings out some very bad fashion. For example, someone I work with came into the office wearing a midriff baring top. Not only is this completely inappropriate for the workplace, but keep in mind that she's also a grandmother. It was like the sun...I couldn't look at her directly or I'd be blinded.

Then there's the short shorts and miniskirts. Don't get me wrong, I love my short shorts too. But people, if your butt checks are hanging out, it's too short.
What fashion faux pas have you seen lately?

Picnic in the Park

Dress-Modcloth(similar in different colors, dressy option, sundress),  Wedges-Nordstrom

I styled this Picnic in the Park look for May's Tea Time over at Cup of Tea.

I'm not actually in a park (it's my parent's backyard) nor did I really have a picnic, but I figured I could fool you with the basket.

Today I'm over here giving you a peek inside my beach bag. I consider Memorial Day weekend the unofficial start of summer, so now is the perfect time to start planning your beach bag.

Didn't win? Don't fret. I've got another awesome giveaway coming up this week!

All Tied Up

This outfit was inspired by Jessica from Jessica Chronicled. After my mom hemmed my polka dot dress, there was a bunch of material left over. She asked me if I wanted her to make it into something and she came up with this tie scarf. Until I saw the similar look on Jessica, I wasn't sure how to style it. Thanks girl for the inspiration!

Button Down-Thrifted A&F (similar button down), Scarf-DIY by my mom (similar in yellow), Jeans-Paper Denim Cloth ($15 option), Wedges-Nordstrom
I wore this outfit to work and got a mixed review from my boss's husband. He did a double take when he saw me and said, "You're wearing a tie?!" as if I had walked into work wearing a bikini. He also said this outfit sends the message "don't mess with me" but I think that's just from the dirty look I gave him after he dissed my outfit.

Do you guys like my hair like this? I used the no heat curls headband (type that into You Tube for a tutorial) and I think I'm kinda obsessed with it (even more so than the sock bun). I first tried it the night before my cousin's wedding. I've now discovered it will actually work if I just put my hair in the headband for 30 minutes and then hair spray it into place. For someone that usually blow dries then painstakingly flat irons my hair, this is revolutionary!

Have you tried the no heat curls headband method?

Guest Post: Dani from The Daily Dani

Today Dani from The Daily Dani is here with us to show you how to style a maxi skirt! I love Dani's California cool, boho vibe and so I knew she'd be the perfect person to rock a maxi.
Hi there, everyone! I'm Dani, from The Daily Dani! I post daily outfit photos, weekly blogger features, and the occasional celeb fashion update! I'm a lover of all things sea foam green and John Stamos-related, and I am seriously in love with fashion!
Sharon and I have become buddies here in the blogosphere, and I was so excited when she asked me to guest post on The Tiny Heart! I'm here to talk to you about a trend that I just love! Today, I get to teach you lovely readers the many fabulous ways to make a maxi skirt work for you, no matter what your personal style!
{Skirt: Target | Tie dye tee: Chase LA // Gray sweater: Nordstrom | Gingham shirt: J. Crew | Belt: Kohl's}
When I heard that maxi skirts were back on-trend, the idea really scared me at first! Truth be told, before this year, I hadn't worn a maxi skirt since the floor-length denim that I used to wear with platform clogs when I was 14! One of my favorite things about blogging is seeing the way other bloggers make trends all their own - it's an easy way to mentally transition into a look before you try it out in real life!

I wanted to show you here that with different pieces of clothing and accessories, a maxi skirt can absolutely be transformed to match your style and to match almost any occasion!

{Huaraches: JustFab | Dreamcatcher necklace: flammable hearts | Watch: Adidas // Gold necklace: derng | Heels: madden girl | Bow: JujuBoutique}

I think it's fantastic that a different pair of shoes, the switch of a necklace, or putting your hair up can make a maxi skirt as versatile as your favorite pair of tried-and-true blue jeans! The right mix can take your maxi from day to night, casual to the office, and everywhere in-between!

Here are some more ways to pump up and transition your maxi skirts!

Day to Night!

Beach to Brunch!

Weekend to Work!

Ready, set, try this trend!
Please pay me a visit over at The Daily Dani and say hello!

Sharon, thanks so much for having me here at The Tiny Heart!

Thanks so much Dani, for showing us all these maxi skirt looks!

Wedding Guest Attire: Lace Dress

 Dress-Nordstroms, Necklace-Eclectic Ornaments, Shoes-Oasap, Clutch-HanMade Things

Yesterday I went to wedding #3 of the year out on Long Island to see my cousin get married. Highlights included: a gorgeous outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour overlooking the Long Island Sound, flavored champagne drinks by People's Pops, and seeing almost my entire family.

The not so good stuff: no soap in the bathroom (despite telling the attendant to replace it), the ceremony taking place on a muddy, grassy incline (all the ladies had trouble walking in their heels), and sitting in traffic on the ride home (took us 3 hours, ack).

I have to give a shout out to the kind folks over at for giving me a credit towards these shoes. They carry everything you can think of from clothing, jewelry and handbags, but to my pleasant surprise, I discovered that they are also a petite shoe resource!  The shoes I'm wearing are a size 4 (many styles also come in a small as a size 3) and are very affordable at only $30.

Since I know you guys love a deal as much as me, first time customers to can get 20% off their order (details on the site) AND every order gets free worldwide shipping!

Who Wears Short Shorts?

Top-Thrifted Old Navy (cute option), Shorts-AE (very similar), Sunnies-Ray Ban Jr (similar Ray Bans), Sandals-AE (similar), Necklace-Unknown (similar)

Who wears short shorts? I do. Bermuda shorts might be "in" this season, but my tiny legs will not be caught dead in them. Sometimes you have to go against trend and work with your body. Petites, are you with me?

Your eyes are not deceiving you, I am actually wearing lipstick. Lipstick is something I despise. No matter what shade I put on, I feel like my lips look like Ronald McDonald. But the cheapskate in me couldn't resist trying this NYC Color hot pink lipstick for 99 cents. It's much brighter in person and while I don't love it, I don't hate it either. Guess I have to keep searching for the perfect shade.

Are you Team short shorts or Team Bermudas?

Be sure to stop back tomorrow for a giveaway!

I have a little update on the neighbor that abused his dog. According to the local paper, he was in fact arrested. He's being charged with one count of animal abuse (one count doesn't seem like enough though). The article doesn't mention anything about the dog being placed in a shelter but I'm keeping at eye out on Petfinder.

Dress-Local boutique (cute option), Necklace-Stella & Dot, Pumps-Andres Machado, Sunnies-Ray Ban, Clutch-Vintage (similar under $20)

The hubs and I were supposed to do our wedding photos on this very bridge. I just loved the idea of doing our First Look by meeting each other in the middle of it. However, things did not go as planned. They were calling for rain on our wedding day and we had to arrange an alternate photo location. Just as we were pulling up to do the blog photo shoot, a bride and her entire wedding party were posing on the other bridge that runs across this lake. On a sunny, warm, beautiful day. Ironic.

There were quite a bunch of onlookers at the lake, including an entire boyscout troop that seemed to be having their Saturday troop meeting there so they could fish. I was also fending off a swarm of bumblebees as I posed for the photos. So, part of me is glad we didn't do our wedding photos here. Beestings and boyscouts don't exactly scream bridal.

Q&A: Kristen from The Mrs & The Momma

Today we have a Q&A with Kristen from The Mrs & The Momma! Kristen is a stylish momma to four kids and always looks so pulled together despite her busy life! I hope you enjoy getting to know her as much as I did.

1.  Why did you originally start blogging?
I first started blogging in 2007 just for my family.  Then in 2011, after giving birth to my fourth child, I decided to start a personal style blog to chronicle my fashion choices (good and bad) and to motivate me to "re-find" my style, being in that transitional post-pregnancy stage.  After a few months, I found it hard to keep up with both blogs, so I merged them, resulting in The Mrs. & The Momma being a lifestyle, mommy, and personal style blog.

2.  What are your style tips for moms on the go?
My main style rule I go by is to always wear at least one piece that makes my look unique and/or makes me feel good.  As a mom, getting dressed everyday is sometimes done in a matter of seconds, and may or may not even look decent.  On those days, I'll throw on my favorite scarf or a statement necklace, and I'll feel much more put together.  Also, I think some good black-rimmed glasses look chic on mommas!

3.  What is your favorite spring/summer trend?
Color!!!!  I'm usually a go-to black kinda girl, so all of the color this year is forcing me to get out there a bit when taking risks with my style.  My favorites of the season are yellow, pastel purple, and turquoise.

4.  What are your favorite places to shop?
I really love to shop anywhere I can find either quality staples or unique finds at cool local boutiques.  But as for chains, I love Banana Republic, Target, F21, ModCloth, ASOS, Loft, and CAbi.

5.  What is your go-to outfit?
When I find myself aimlessly staring at my closet and cannot seem to find something to wear, I'll end up wearing my Rachel Pally maxi skirt.  It's a no brainer, no fail, no effort kind of skirt.  I usually pair it with a tucked in blouse and a belt.  Then, I'll wear it with sandals or heels depending on if I need to dress it up or not.

6.  Which item in your closet you couldn't live without?
This is a tough one.  I'd have to say head wear.  I tend to wear a lot of hats or head wraps on days my hair is less than par....which is most days.  A close second would be a blazer...I'm totally into my black and white striped one right now, which is proving to go with everything!!!

7.  Who or what has the most influence on your style?
Good question!  I'd probably say it's a mix between seasonal trends, fashion icons, and what I can put together that says "me".  Pinterest doesn't hurt either.  :)

Living in Austin, I find myself occasionally leaning towards a "granola" vibe in the summer, as well as the quirky Austin in a sense, my hometown has an influence on my style just as much as mainstream fashion.

8.  As a wife, mom, and do you make time for it all?
I get this question a lot.  I wish I had much more time to fact, I feel like I could (and want) to put more time into it, however, my family comes first.  I am blessed to stay at home with my four little ones and I make sure their needs are tended to before I sit down at my computer.  Blogging is my "TV time" after the kids go down...meaning, I don't watch much TV and would rather blog anyway.  And truthfully, there's not time for it all.  You just have to do your best to prioritize what matters most.

Boyz in the Hood

Tank-Abercrombie (option for $4.50), Skirt-F21(similar), Necklace-F21(similar), Sandals-Target (similar)

First, I want to say thank you for making my last post the most commented on to date! Apparently you guys really love imaginary yachts.

Saturday morning had more drama than a Jerry Springer episode. As you know, I've got some interesting neighbors. I heard two of them screaming and cursing at each other. Apparently one neighbor saw another neighbor (who looks like he walked out of Boyz in the Hood) beat his dog and told him he was calling the police. The neighbor with the dog took his young daughter and hid down the block like a coward.

From my window, I saw the cops pull up and then an hour later Animal Control came. They wound up removing the dog from the home. Like Jinx, this dog is a pitbull and sadly they often get put down because many people don't want to adopt pits. I just hope and pray this dog is able to find a good home.

And that I get some normal neighbors.

EBEW: Nautical

Blazer-F21 (similar with a fun cuff), Tee-Express (worn here, similar for $9), Dress worn as Skirt-F21(worn here, cute option), Belt-Old Navy (similar), Wedges-Nordstrom, Clutch-Vintage (similar)
I'm linking up with Everybody Everywear for the nautical challenge.

The hubby suggested I pose with a boat for my nautical look. Clearly he forgot that we don't actually own one (small details). I thought about going over to the local marina to find a boat to pose with. But then I figured if the owner was there they wouldn't be too pleased that I was pretending to pass their boat off as my own and proceed to take photos with it.

So please picture this outfit next to my imaginary yacht. (Since it's imaginary I took the liberty of upgrading it for you from just a boat. You can thank me later).

Q&A: Julia from Cup of Tea

Today I did a Q&A session with Julia from Cup of Tea. Julia has the most gorgeous red hair and always looks so ladylike in all her outfits. I hope you enjoy getting to know her!

Where did the name of your blog come from?
Cup of Tea came from my love for tea!  I love to enjoy a good cup of hot tea and am always trying new kinds.  I related this to style in that everyone has their own taste.  I like trying new styles but ultimately, my personal style is my cup of tea.
What are some of your wardrobe essentials?
Right now, it's probably a tie between [faux] leather jackets and blazers.  I'm enjoying the spring weather because its my chance to wear these light outerwear pieces and not be too cold or hot.  I don't think I can have too many of either of these pieces!

What's your favorite spring trend?
Definitely the colored skinny jeans.  More specifically, mint colored skinny jeans.  I'm completely obsessed with mine.  I have to remind myself to wear my other jeans or else people will think I never do laundry and just wear the same pants everyday.
What are your favorite places to shop?
My newest favorite place to shop is a local consignment shop called That Girl.  It's exciting to go in there and search around.  You never know what you'll find!  As for main stream stores, some favorites include H&M, Express, and Kohl's.

What's your go-to outfit (aka what you put on when you can think of what to wear)?
My go-to outfit is probably a pair of skinny jeans, my brown leather riding boots, and some kind of flowy top.  My riding boots got so much use this past fall and winter!  I'll be really sad when it's too hot to wear them this summer.

What are some of your daily blog reads?

Aside from The Tiny Heart, I enjoy reading A Southern Drawl, Shannon Hearts, Girl and Closet, and so so many more!!

Who or what has had the most influence on your style?
Vintage style has always influenced me.  Photos of my mom from the '70s give me a lot of inspiration (it helps that I wear many of her clothes from that era!).  I'm really drawn to the '60s and '70s music and fashion styles (the good ones, NOT the cringe-worthy ones), and also the Swiss Graphic Design style.  Current style icons of mine include Alexis Bledel and Lauren Conrad.

Be sure to head on over and see more of Julia's style at Cup of Tea!
